Tis the season to be link merry. This week’s roundup spreads the joy with many great links for your roundup stocking. Peace.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
Odd Todd Christmas - This is like watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation for me. It’s an annual ritual I have to do at least once. I followed Odd Todd a looooooong time ago back when he got laid off after the boom collapse. This guy took that misfortune and turned it into a hilarious flash cartoon and now has an extended list of “oddtodd” merchandise. I suggest starting off with his first cartoon and I guarantee you’ll pee your pants. (beware - he curses a bit and you’ll need to turn up your volume so put your headphones on or invite everyone over to watch.) The previous “Odd Todd Christmas” link is to his holiday Flash word game.
Rocketboom Holiday - nice, warm, funny, holiday special from RocketBoom.
Do good
Yahoo! For Good - do some good this holiday season and in the coming new year by dropping this charity badge on your site. You pick the charity of your choice. We’ll be adding this in the near future as well.
Tech News/Editorial
Microsoft’s RSS Patent Attempt - when building web applications I’m primarily a C#/.NET developer, so for the most part I’m a Microsoft advocate but this just looks evil.
Web 2.0 is not a Gift - Fred Wilson is a partner over at Union Square Ventures and wrote an excellant article about all that is good with web 2.0
Surfing from your couch - Gigaom has a great article on what could very well become one of the new hot web frontiers in I’m gonna say ‘08-09. Room for potential indeed.
Musicbox
Filter Music - my favorite site for finding internet radio stations. Great for web workers everywhere.
Singing Fish - find free mp3s/video/audio online - need I saw more?
Bloc Party - UK band I’ve been listening too a lot recently. Cure-ish, danceable, head bumpin good stuff.
Web Apps
Talk Shoe - Talk Shoe = Talk Show…get it? Anwyay, not sure how I could have missed this site but I think this one is a winner. Basically create your own talk show online. I’ve listened to a few of their shows and everything seems very professional and well executed. We’re going to implement this sometime in 2007 here on Juxtaviews. The other competitor I know out there is BlogTalkRadio but I’m thinking that right now Talk Shoe is leading the pack. Any others like this we need to know about?
Fauxto - photoshop for the web browser? Not just yet, but getting there.
Web Development
WaitN - Web Application Test Unit for .NET. If you’ve heard of WaitR then you know this is basically a .NET port of the Ruby based WaitR project. Looks very cool!
WebDesign Toolbox - great link to tuck away in your favorites. Tons of web resources like icons, fonts, widgets, etc.
Startup / Entrepreneur
Cambrian House - Do you have great startup ideas that you will never be able to take to IPO for a variety of reasons (… or excuses)? Well, submit them to Cambrian House and if they pass the “crowd test” they’ll build it. Then sit back and collect the royalties as beautiful women fan you with palm fronds and feed you grapes.
Education
VideoJug.com - Impress your friends by throwing a playing card through a glass window and other tricks. Short documentary instructions for how to do just about anything.
Best Free Reference Web Sites - Get most of the answers to your reference questions here.
Wordie - Flickr for words. Great vocabulary builder if you have a standardized test coming up (wink, wink).
Text Book Revolution - I’m a sucker for free textbooks. Maybe I’m trying to make up for the outrageous prices I paid in college.
Web Development / Programming
ArtyPapers - Beutiful site and great idea for community-driven web development! ArtyPapers showcases the incredible design and programming chops of site founder, R. Marie Cox. And why wasn’t she in this list?
ScriptVote - This site is like Digg for Web scripts. Very promising!
Best Tech Videos - Better than going to class. Learn programming for free in your own home!
Entertainment
Museum of Online Museums - I was going to put this under “Education”, but this is simply too much fun. An amazing resource and great design.
The Perry Bible Fellowship - This is NOT a religious site! I almost didn’t click on this due to the title. However, this is an amazing collection of comics in a wide variety of styles from artist, Nicholas Gurewitch.
Alflamont - This post has an excellent collection of free documentaries.
Read/WriteWeb 2007 Web Predictions - Some really interesting predicitons for 2007 from one of my favorite blogs, Read/WriteWeb.
Line Rider - Another flash game that was originally created by Boštjan Cadež, a Slovenian university student, in September of 2006. It almost immediately gathered a cult following.
flOw - An original flash based game, flOw. Evovle as you eat other organisms and continue to dive deeper into space. This was intially developed as a thesis but now grown as a viral hit.
TIME.com: Person of the Year: You - 2006 is the year of user generated content.
Zend Framework and Google Get Together - The latest version of the Zend PHP Framework (0.6) includes a Gdata module donated by Google. Google currently uses GData in its Google Calendar API, Blogger Data API, Google Base API, Spreadsheets API and Google Code Search API, among others. With the GData module in place, users of the Zend PHP Framework can more easily create mashups and better utilize Google components that use GData.
Mozilla Password Exploit Bug Still Present - I was going to put this in the roundup last week, but I figured since it was old news, it had long been fixed. Turns out, the mozilla password manager still contains an exploit which could leave your saved passwords vulnerable to theft.
Donate Your Thumb Drives - Tech company, Inveneo, is encouraging folks to donate their used or new thumb drives to them so they can distribute them schools and community centers in Africa.
Wii Damage - Gordon Jackson is maintaining a blog of alleged damage caused by the new Nintendo Wii remote. In other news, Nintendo is also facing a class action lawsuit on behalf of those folks who own defective wrist straps.
Ebay Folds Chinese Site - Ebay has officially folded EachNet, it’s person to person trading site in China, and instead will parter with Beijing-based TOM Online in 2007.
PicasaWeb Has Video Uploading Now - Picasa, Google’s online photo management tool now supports video uploading.
Google Toolbar Saves Your Search History - This may be old news, but I was kind of surprised to learn if you have a gmail account and you use the google toolbar, you can access your search history online for the past three months.
FiOS TV Coming to NJ - FiOS TV service will soon be available to hundreds of thousands of people in New Jersey. Hear that Shauny?
