Thanks to our readers for being patient as we redesign/reorganize the site this week. New design and new interviews next week, I promise! Also, we have a few new interviews we wanted to announce, in addition to the list I mentioned inlast week’s roundup. We’re glad to have the opportunity to speak with (in no order) Rocketboom, Meevee, and MOMB.
Ok, back to our weekly roundup…
Jason’s Open Software List- Great list of open source software. You may never need to purchase software again
Best Web Based Spreadsheet Apps - The new and heavily covered Web Worker Daily reviews the best options to serve your web based spreadsheet applications needs.
Venture Beat - Matt Marshall reinvents Silicon Beat and succeeds. Keep up to date with who’s investing in who and let Matt deliver the “why?” - like today’s news that caught my interest FreeWebs, a blog creation and hosting Co., raises $11M. For all you think tanks out there - now you only have one website to visit to either kickstart new ideas or begin banging your head against the wall when you realize “I could have built that” or “I had the same idea” - but hey fella, if thats true then get off your bum and get onto your next great idea… but with some passion this time alright. Oh, and then tell us about it:)
Smithsonian 4th Annual Photo Contest - All you photographer wannabees have a chance to becom “remarkable” - “We are looking for remarkable images, photographed within the past three years (since January 1, 2004), that relate to five subjects of special interest to our magazine: Americana, The Natural World, People, Travel and Altered Images. The competition is open to amateur photographers, 18 years or older.” Thanks to bumpershine for pointing me to this one.
VivaPop - Web based calendar to keep all your schedules in sync. What’s important here is that there’s a fee based structure ($1 for 30 days). Correct, it’s not free. Expect to see more of this pricing structure as more and more web applications begin to form some type of business model around their product - “vivapop.com’s mission is to simplify the lives of busy people by providing them with a web-based, voice accessible, sync-enabled scheduling and communication system that is fully integrated with local community resources, programs and events.”
Amazon Video Download - Amazon joins the download video marketplace.
Yahoo! GO - Yahoo! GO attempts to organize the content import in your life via mobile, TV, and PC product and services. It’s in early beta so I’d expect some bugs. This is more of “keep an eye out” because this is a market I would think Yahoo wants to compete.
Rajiv’s Roundup (added on 9/11/06)
Microsoft Codename Max - Microsoft released an update to a software called Max over the weekend that originally allowed you to organize and share your photos but now includes an RSS reader. If this bundles with Vista, it could hurt other desktop RSS readers.
Watch The Web : LifeHacker - I don’t have a TV in my bedroom and thanks to Windows MCE, TVTonic, and Yahoo! Channel, there is no reason for it. But also, take a look at LifeHacker if you are looking other more easily viewed web video offerings.
Democracy Player - Another great Internet TV platform that lets you subscribe to channels, RSS video feeds and watch it the videos in full screen.
